Storyline 360 - Who Are You as a Leader?
I designed this training for the client to increase their leaders’ awareness in leadership styles. Once one is aware of their leadership style, it’s easier to recognize communication practices that come easily and ones that are more difficult.
Audience: Corporate leaders with varying degrees of experience as people-leaders
Responsibilities: Needs analysis, instructional design, eLearning development, and visual design
Tools Used in Development: Articulate Storyline 360, Vyond, Adobe XD, MindMeister
Client: Chicory Leadership
The Problem: Sarah delivers in-person training, but needed a way to reach the people that couldn’t travel to the seminar. She wanted an e-learning that they could access on their own time. Included in the training is a learning inventory to determine the learning style that best fits their communication/way of working. She needed help determining the technology that would allow that type of interaction. Sarah knew the content that she wanted the learner to access, but didn’t know the methods (software, technology) available to use.
The Solution: After analyzing the performance problem, I proposed a scenario-based eLearning experience. The learners would be able to practice forming responses based on what they learned about their style of communication and the style of the people they work with. They would be able to access assistance from the embedded mentor.
Our goal was to increase job satisfaction and the feeling of safety within the job for all. I wanted the leaders to be able to explore their choices and see the possible (probable) consequences of those choices in a risk-free environment. This would help the learner connect their choices with the real-world consequences.
The client accepted my proposal and we proceeded with the project.
PROCESS
Action Mapping:
I consulted with Sarah, the lead trainer, as my subject matter expert (SME) to develop the action map and establish the overall goal for this project.
We decided to measure progress by monitoring the employee satisfaction survey data. We identified the actions required to teach leaders to gain the skills needed to effectively manage employees.
Text-Based Storyboard:
Once the action map was completed and approved, I began working on a text-based storyboard that incorporated these key actions into a cohesive narrative.
I framed the scenario as a leader receiving negative feedback from her reviews and going to her boss for advice to fix the problems. Her boss then recommends a seminar on leadership styles. I consulted with the SME to ensure each element was grounded in reality.
Visual Mockups:
Once the text-based storyboard was revised and approved, I began creating visual mockups for the scenario in Adobe XD. Adobe XD allowed me to experiment with visual elements and layouts in order to settle on something that felt polished and immersive.
I maintained a consistent visual style for each element, from the background to the characters. I used the Chicory Leadership’s branded color palette.
